SUMMARY:Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) / Murnau 101
DESCRIPTION:MURNAU 101\n“Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans”\nDirector: F. W. Murnau\nYear of production: 1927\nLength: 95 min.\nTitles: English\nEntrance: FREE \nSunrise: A Song of Two Humans (also known as Sunrise) is a 1927 American silent romantic drama film directed by German director F. W. Murnau and starring George O’Brien\, Janet Gaynor\, and Margaret Livingston. Sunrise won the Academy Award for Unique and Artistic Picture at the 1st Academy Awards in 1929 and Janet Gaynor won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Critics have called it the greatest film of the silent era\, with some considering it a masterpiece and one of the greatest films ever made. In 1989\, Sunrise was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States Library of Congress for films that are “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant”. \nFriedrich Wilhelm Murnau (1888 – 1931) was a German film director\, greatly influenced by Schopenhauer\, Nietzsche\, Shakespeare and Ibsen plays he had seen at the age of 12. During World War I he served as a company commander at the eastern front and was in the German air force. He created the 1922 vampire thriller Nosferatu\, as well as such compelling examination of love as 1927’s Sunrise and 1931’s Tabu. Murnau’s promising career was cut short by a car accident in 1931.
