On this part of the site you can learn Albanian. Albanian language (gjuha shqipe) is one of the oldest languages of Europe. Albanian language is a phonetic language. All letters are pronounced the way they are written.
Vowels
А а – ‘a’ as in “father, car”
E e – ‘e’ as in “elephant, Cheryl, metal, technique”
Ë ë – ‘u’ as in “burn, turn”, or ‘e’ as in father
I i – ‘ee’ as in “feet, sheet, meet, sleep, beep”
O o – ‘o’ as in “obey”, or ‘au’as in ”Audrey”
U u – ‘oo’ as in “moon, soon, cartoon”
Y y – ‘u’ as in “avenue”
Consonants
Bb – ‘b’ as in “banana, ballad”
C c – ‘ts’ as in “wits, tsetse”
Ç ç – ‘ch’ as in “chair, church, much”
D d – ‘d’ as in “dentist, deal, done”
Dh dh – ‘th’ as in “that, then, the”
F f – ‘f’ as in “film, fun, factory”
G g – ‘g’ as in “great, game, go”
Gj gj – ‘dge’ as in “dodge, edge,”
H h – ‘h’ as in “helicopter, high, hod”
J j – ‘y’ as in “year, yeah, yawn”
K k – ‘k’ as in “bank, krank” or ‘c’ as in camera, cool”
L l – ‘l’ as in “milk, liver”
Ll ll – ‘ll’ as in “mill, still, chill”
M m – ‘m’ as in “mother, match, move”
N n – ‘n’ as in “neck, net, nurse”
Nj nj – ‘ni’ as in “onion, opinion”
P p – ‘p’ as in “problem, purse, party, partner”
Q q – ‘q’ as in “quick” (usually in foreign words), ‘ch’ as in “chair” (softer than the first one)
R – ‘r’ as in “rico, rumble, rude”
Rr rr – ‘rr’ as in “hurrah, burrito” (strongly trilled)
S s – ‘s’ as in “hospital, siege, smooth”
Sh sh – ‘sh’ as in “ship, shoulder”
T t – ‘t’ as in “telephone, tangle, tide”
Th th – ‘th’ as in “things, thought, though”
V v – ‘v’ as in “village, veterinary, vowel”
X x – ‘ds’ as in “kids, Arveladze”
Xh xh – ‘j’ as in “jump, John, Jersey”
Z z – ‘z’ as in “zero, zip”
Zh zh – ‘as’ as in “pleasure”, or ‘is’ as in “vision”
Ç ç- tʃ – ‘ch’ as in cherry
Dh dh– ð – ‘the’ as in The United Kingdom
Ë ë – ə – ‘e’ as in the man
The letter ë is almost never pronounced at the end of the word. For example the word portë is pronounced exactly the same as the English word port.
Please remember that the letter ë must be spelled correctly at all times, you cannot use the letter e instead. It becomes very difficult to read and understand the written text in Albanian, if you don’t pronounce it right. Words can also have a different meaning for the reader, for example:
ende = yet or still; ëndë = pleasure;
endje = to weave; ëndje = apetite,
nder = honour; ndër = among;
tënde = your; tendë = canopy
Gj gj- dʒ – ‘g’ as in region
L l– l(soft) – ‘L’ as in Le port albanais, French
The letters L and LL are two different letters. These letters must be pronounced correctly in Albanian. There is usually a difference in meaning between words with a single L and double LL, for instance the word:
djali = (the) son, and djalli = the devil;
halë = fish bone and hallë = aunt (father’s sister).

Q q– tch – ‘tch’ as in ketchup, catch.
Rr rr– rr – ‘rr’ as in burrito (very trilled, like in spanish)
Sh sh- ʃ – ‘sh’ as in ship, shopping
Th th– θ – ‘th’ as in think, through
Xh xh– ds – ‘j’ as in John, jingle
Y y – y – ‘ü’ as in Düsseldorf, or ‘u’ as in avenue
Zh zh – ʒ – ‘as’ as in pleasure, ‘is’ as in vision
