Dementia 13 është film i pavarur bardh-e-zi triller-horor, me regji të Francis Coppola dhe produksion të Roger Corman. Ky është rrëfim për një të vejë e cila zhvillon planin për ta marrë pasurinë e burrit të saj të ndjerë, por e cila sulmohet nga një vrasës me sëpatë i cili fshihej në pronën familjare.

Edhe pse Coppola ishte i involvuar në të kaluarën në së paku dy filma ‘seksploatues’, Dementia 13 ishte filmi i parë “legjitim” mainstream ku ai ishte regjisor. Corman i ofroi Coppola-së të bëjë regjinë e filmit me buxhet të vogël në Irlandë duke përdorur fondet e mbetura nga filmi The Young Racers paraprakisht i përfunduar nga Corman, në të cilin Coppola ishte teknik i zërit. Producenti donte kopje të lirë të Psycho, së bashku me atmosferë gotike dhe vrasje brutale, dhe Coppola shpejtë shkroi skenarin sipas kërkesave të Corman. Edhe pse kishte liri të plotë regjisoriale gjatë produksionit, Coppola pati mosmarrëveshje me Corman pasi filmi u krye. Producenti mendoi se ai nuk ishte e publikueshëm dhe kërkoi disa ndryshime. Corman më vonë e solli një regjisor tjetër, Jack Hill, t’i filmojë sekuencat shtesë.

Dementia 13 is a 1963 independently made black-and-white horror-thriller film, written and directed by Francis Coppola and produced by Roger Corman. It’s a story about a scheming widow who hatches a daring plan to get her hands on her late husband’s inheritance, unbeknownst to her that she is targeted by an axe-wielding murderer who lurks within the family’s estate.

Although Coppola had been involved in at least two sexploitation films previously, Dementia 13 served as his first mainstream “legitimate” directorial effort. Corman offered Coppola the chance to direct a low-budget horror film in Ireland using funds left over from Corman’s recently completed The Young Racers, on which Coppola had worked as a sound technician. The producer wanted a cheap Psycho copy, complete with gothic atmosphere and brutal killings, and Coppola quickly wrote a screenplay with Corman’s requirements. Although he was given total directorial freedom during production, Coppola found himself at odds with Corman after the film was completed. The producer declared it unreleasable and demanded several changes be made. Corman eventually brought in another director, Jack Hill, to film additional sequences.
